Webquest: The Shawnee

Intro:
Tomorrow, you are going back in time to the early 1800s, to visit Tecumseh in his village at Prophetstown. The problem is, you won’t arrive in the village, but will need to figure out how to get there!

Task:
You need to create a list of Shawnee words that you think will be useful in asking nearby people for directions to the village, and in understanding any dangers that they may warn you about. After you arrive, you will write a letter home about what you have seen in the Shawnee villages in the area. Your goal is to learn important information about the culture, language, and practices of the Shawnee in the 1800s and to communicate it to a modern reader.

Process:

Word List:

  • Explore some of the following sites about Shawnee-language words:
  • Make a list of at least 10 words you think would be most important to you as a time traveler looking for direction and trying to be safe in the wilderness of 1800s Indiana. Write the English word next to the word.
  • Write 4-5 sentences about your words. How would knowing these words help you? What words do you still not know that you would want to learn?

Letter:

  • Explore some of the following sites about life among the 1800s Shawnee:
  • Take notes about Shawnee culture, practices, religion, history, or any other subject that you find most interesting and
  • Write a letter home to your family. Tell them what you’ve seen during your stay with the Shawnee in the 1800s. What is different from how you live? What is surprising or unusual? Are there things you wish we did now?
